when it comes to blogging about o holy night.
but the first time i ever payed attention to the words from this song was last year. it was my first christmas as a christian and all of it was like i was seeing everything in a brand new light. last night dustin was talking about how jesus makes people NEW. and it was really cool to look back. especially on my first year as a christian. jesus left his riches of heaven not only to enter into this messy world, but to become my mess so i can become rich. not earthy rich. he came and my soul found its worth. which is what brings me back to o holy night. maybe it’s how old the lyrics sound that we don’t listen to their meaning. but really.
long lay the world in sin and error pining ’till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
a thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
fall on your knees, oh hear the angels voices. o night divine, o night when christ was born.
truly he taught us to love one another. his law is love and his gospel is peace.
chains he shall break for the slave is our brother and in his name all oppression shall cease.
so this is my favorite christmas song. maybe one of my favorite songs ever. i mean, just take a step back and realize that is what christmas is. it’s all worthless without him. this holiday is literally pointless without this song’s meaning. and it breaks my heart that tons of people are out there singing the words without knowing their soul’s worth. without knowing his love and peace. without knowing that the reason they’re singing this song is because he came once and he’s going to break the chains and make an end to all of sin’s oppression.
